What is the English GCSE course?

This English GCSE course is taught once a week over one year, with the final exams held in May.

If you are an adult returning to education you may have found you need a more up-to-date qualification than the one you have already, or maybe you missed out the first time around.

If you lack confidence you may benefit from attending an ‘Improve your English’ course first before embarking on the GCSE. It is preferable for you to have already achieved a grade D (or grade 3) in English GCSE.

Course topics

You will follow various forms of practical writing tasks:

  • Essays
  • Articles
  • Letters
  • Reports

Teaching and learning

In lessons, you will read and discuss media, non-fiction and literary texts. There will also be many opportunities to develop oral skills in a variety of class situations, including plenty of discussion work in small or larger groups. You will be encouraged to identify any errors in your technique and help will be on hand to correct them.

You will also be required to write in a range of different styles for different purposes and audiences. There will be homework set each week which will be handed in the following week.
