Trip to Nepal a ‘breathtaking experience’

Since September 2011, two groups of students have been working towards an expedition to Nepal by fundraising, improving their fitness and team building,

The expedition was led by the students, who took responsibility for much of the decision making and the expedition budget. Team members showed exemplary diplomatic and negotiating skills when faced with tough decisions.

Children in Need fundraising a success

Fancy dress theme has become tradition at College for Children in Need and this year was no different, with pirates and ninjas sweeping the campus.

Fundraising activities have been occurring all week with student bands playing at break, home baked cakes sold by the dozen, and some great prizes on offer in the raffle competition.

The 11th annual Alton College Foundation Scholarships Awards Ceremony took place in the Berkoff Performing Arts Centre last week to an auditorium filled with students, parents, sponsors, staff, Governors and Foundation Directors. 

During the reception Chris Butler and the Inside Indigo band entertained the guests.

Six students pick up award from Cambridge competition

Six students studying AS level Chemistry were honoured with silver and copper awards for their success in the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge this summer.

Callum Green, Chris Slim and Eloise Stradling achieved a silver award which put them in the top 22% of the 4000 entries across the country. Jaz Weston, Gina Curwen and Amber West picked up copper awards, securing their places in the top 60%.

Livvy brings home the bronze

16-year old Olivia “Livvy” Breen has spent her summer holidays living a dream, and anyone following her in the London 2012 Paralympic Games will recognise her contagious smile and share the excitement of her performances in the Women’s 100m T38, Women’s 200m T38 and Women’s 4x100m relay T35/T38.

When she’s not training hard for her sport, Livvy attends Bohunt School and also takes part in the 14-16 programme at Alton College.

Bursary supports student's dreams

Treloar School and Alton College student Marie Devlin is celebrating accepting a bursary from the Helena Kennedy Foundation which will allow her to study Speech and Communication Science at the University of Portsmouth.

Marie, who has scoliosis and uses a manual wheelchair, has been working hard to combine AS and A levels at Alton College and Treloar School over the last 3 years.

Having achieved AS levels in Communication & Culture and English Language & Literature, as well as a full A level in Health & Social Care at Alton College, Marie also has an AS level in Art & Design and a Foundation Diploma in ICT under her belt from Treloar School.

Results in core subjects such as English, Mathematics, Sciences, Modern Languages, Humanities and the Arts were particularly notable for their success.

Alton College students, yet again, are celebrating outstanding exam results with a 99% pass rate at A Level, 82% top grades and nearly a third of all students achieving the highest grades - A*/A.  Over 30 subjects in total achieved a 100% pass rate.

College bands perform at the HMV Institute

On Friday evening, two bands from Alton College performed at the HMV Institute in Birmingham in the national finals of Music for Youth.

After negotiating appalling weather and driving conditions, Inside Indigo [Aimee Mackenzie, Hannah Rixon, Jess Holland & Kiera Fife] and Time Will Tell [Ben Gillan, Kris Masters, Ollie Vanotzzi, Sam Gallop & Will Hearne] arrived in Birmingham with just enough time to spare for a short sound check before the doors opened.
