Bar Mock Trial finals

Once again, Alton College students reached the National final of the Bar Mock Trial competition, held in Edinburgh in March

In March, 14 Alton College students competed as a team in the finals of the Citizenship Foundation’s National Bar Mock Trial competition in the Court of Sessions in Edinburgh. Having won the Guildford regional heat in November 2014, the students argued three cases before judges including Lord Leveson, who chaired the recent inquiry into the British press.

Parliamentary candidates from the five main parties were grilled by students on their policies last week at a hustings debate on campus.

Former Student Union President Toby Millard, previously from Bohunt School chaired the debate while a variety of students including current Student Union members pitched some excellent questions to the main five parliamentary candidates; Damian Hinds, Peter Bisset, Alex Wilks, Richard Robinson and Peter Baillie.

Good luck to the two members of Alton College Students' Union who are travelling to Liverpool to speak on #dropthelearningtax at the NUS conference tomorrow. They calculate if VAT was cut it could save us £300k a year.

Sec Gen of OS inspires geographers

Geography students were inspired and motivated by Dr Vanessa Lawrence CB, Secretary General of Ordnance Survey International and Co-Chair of a United Nations committee, in Wessex Arts theatre last week. They also learnt how geographical principals affect everything from Olympic Torch relay routes to the NHS.

As part of the Speakers for Schools initiative, AS Geography students at Alton College were treated to a fascinating and inspirational talk given by Dr Vanessa Lawrence CB, Secretary General of Ordnance Survey International, she is also Co-Chair of United Nations Global Geospatial Information Management.

Parliamentary Award for AC alumna

Laura Jurd, Alton College alumna, has been named Jazz Instrumentalist of the Year at the prestigious APPJAG Parliamentary Jazz Awards 2015. Now in its 11th year, the All Party Parliamentary Jazz Appreciation Group honour the best of British jazz and the awards evening highlights the wealth of talent in the British jazz scene at the moment.

Sports Accolade for Showjumper

Georgie Heeney, previously at Eggar’s School, has won the award for Senior Sportswoman of the Year at the recent East Hampshire Sports Awards. This year the awards were introduced by EHDC Councillor Nick Drew and presented by Fred Dinenage, MBE.
