2017: The Year in Review

2017 was another exceptional year for the College with an outstanding set of exam results (99.2% pass at A level), an innovative new College day providing up to 50 hours more teaching each year and a 10am start for students, a brand new enrichment programme for extra-curricular activities and much more.

British Judo Championships

Lucy Williams, previously at Ash Manor School competed in Sheffield at the British Judo Cadet Championships earlier in December. She was in a tough group of fourteen of the best players in her age and weight group from around the country.

Pineapple Dance

BTEC Performing Arts students and first year A level Dance students recently went to Pineapple Dance Studios in London to undertake some additional practical activities to consolidate their learning.  They participated in a Jazz dance to develop new skills for the BTEC Variety unit and to focus on the American Jazz theme.

Maths Challenge + Alton College = Success!

Lucy Bayliss, previously at Amery Hill School and Sara Garanito, previously at Calthorpe Park School took part in this year’s Mathematical Olympiad for Girls. Over 1700 girls nationwide participated, with the top 25% receiving a Certificate of Distinction. Also, 100 Maths students recently competed in the Senior Maths Challenge with 9 achieving a gold award, 31 a silver award and 29 a bronze.

The inaugural Alton College Foundation Second Year Student Awards Ceremony took place in the Wessex Arts Centre on campus recently.  The Foundation introduced the awards to celebrate students who had shown outstanding achievements within their chosen subjects of Creative Visual Arts, Engineering and Mathematics.

What is good?

Attending lectures from first class academics is part of many courses at Alton College. As part of their A level Philosophy course, students recently attended an Ethics lecture at Bedales School, given by Professor Simon Blackburn renowned Philosopher and  Emeritus  at the University of Cambridge.

Not all learning takes place in classrooms; students often take part in trips, talks and lectures outside campus. As part of their A level Philosophy course, students recently attended an Ethics lecture at Bedales School.

As part of the wide range of extra-curricular activities available to students at Alton College, a group of staff and students, led by Dr Libby Smith, Curriculum Manager for Biology travelled to Dominica as part of ‘Operation Wallacea – conservation research through academic partnerships.’
