Inspiring reasoning and rhymes

Inspiration through poetry has been a theme for the English Department recently. Award-winning poets, Sinead Morrissey and Ian Duhig, inspired English A level students as part of the Winchester Poetry Festival with several students being successful in being shortlisted for an award in the poetry competition ‘Message to a Poem’.

Olympiad success for Maths students

Three College students participated in the annual Maths Olympiad for Girls recently. Jasmine Anwar, previously at Weydon School, Lisa Winkler, previously at Bohunt School and Charlotte Cranmer, previously at Mill Chase Academy (pictured with Dr David Lynch, Curriculum Manager for Maths) undertook the challenge.

Alton College on the world sporting stage

Alton College sport department have been extremely busy recently with success across a range of sports. A college team was entered into the Southern Shooting Championships, competing both as a team and in the individual competition. Cricketing legend Desmond Haynes visited campus, and former student Joe Truman won cycling track gold.

The three students who represented Alton College were Oliver Bowler, Luke Evans and Oscar Peterson, all previously at Bohunt School.

Peter Langton, previously at Treloar College, recently competed at the Stoke Mandeville Stadium in the WheelPower National Junior Games and came third in Boccia and first in both Polybat and Electric Slalom. The Games is an annual event at Stoke Mandeville Stadium for children with disabilities aged between 11 and 18.

Students ski to victory

Four Alton College students competed in the English Schools’ Ski Association National Finals event for the first time at the Norfolk Snowsports Centre in Norwich recently. Individuals came first and second and as a team they won silver.

The Alton College team consisted of Adam Bannister, previously at Eggar’s School, Dan Knight, previously at Bohunt School, Euan Chapman, previously at Weydon School and Ethan Sowik, previously at Amery Hill School.

Student Nets Computing Prize

Niklas Vangerow, previously at Robert May’s School has been awarded the Netcraft AQA Prize 2016  for one of the highest marks in the UK for A level Computing.

Trinity Teaching Tour

The University of Cambridge visited campus for a series of one-to-one practice interviews and lectures as part of the College's More Able and Talented Programme. Lecturers and students from Trinity College, Cambridge provided the sessions to fewer than 10 Colleges in Hampshire.  Hannah Seeckts, Annie Coloe and George Baker here describe the 'Trinity Teaching Tour' experience.

The University of Cambridge visited campus for a series of one-to-one practice interviews and lectures as part of the College's More Able and Talented Programme  which specifically focuses on supporting students to 'Apply for Oxbridge and Russell Group Universities'. 

Weydon student receives iPad

Honor Ramsdale, previously at Weydon School, was chosen from hundreds of students who attended 'WelcomeFest' - our unique welcome event dedicated to our next lower sixth cohort and held annually in July - to receive an iPad mini. She was presented with the iPad by Principal Sara Russell at the beginning of term.

Singing in the Rain

Amazing AC student band Loyd were singing in the rain drawing large crowds at Butserfest this year. The UK’s largest alcohol and drug-free festival this year celebrated its 10th year and Loyd were set to perform on the Introducing Stage, this year sponsored by Alton College.
