F1 in Schools Competition

Paul Cumner and Chris McLennan, both previously at Robert May’s School, recently took part in the judging team for the National Final of the F1 in Schools Competition held at Silverstone. The main objective of the competition is to help change the perceptions of STEM for 9 – 19 year olds by creating a fun and exciting learning environment.

The Health, Childcare and Public Services department celebrated their students’ successes  with an awards ceremony held in the Wessex Arts Theatre. Award categories included friendship, placement, leadership, progress and students’ student.

Celebrating the Bard

To mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, groups of students from College, Eggar’s School, Amery Hill School and Bordon Junior School wrote and performed their own interpretations of several works of the Bard in an open-air-theatre in the town’s Public Gardens.

Urban Sustainability

Urban Sustainability was the focus of  the Geography field trip to London recently. The trip provided students with lots of useful information to help further their knowledge in the study of the Urban Change topic.

Noteworthy donations for Music

Music students will benefit from donations totalling over £4000 from the Ernest Cook Trust and Music for All and EMI Music Sound Foundation which have enabled the College Music Department to purchase a double bass, a bass clarinet and an electronic drum kit. These new instruments will be used by hundreds of music students over the coming years.

Alton College actively promotes STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). Science student Kate Willett, previously at The Petersfield School, was one of 300 students across the world to attend a special leadership course at the US Space & Rocket Center. Our Chemistry students are helping to shape the future of HE Science teaching and our Biology students have had research published.

Police, Camera, Action!

Foundation Learning students on the Pathways and Towards Independence programmes had the chance to get hands on with police uniforms and equipment when PCSO Dean Mohammed from the Alton sector of the Hampshire Constabulary came in to College for a practical session.
