Outstanding Awards

Exceptional student successes were celebrated at Alton College’s annual Outstanding Awards presentation event in December. The awards are given for a range of achievements from academic to friendship and leadership and were presented by Jane Machell, Principal, sponsors and governors.

Royal Military Academy Visit

Students from the BTEC Public Services course at Alton College visited RMA Sandhurst to watch the Commandant’s Dress Rehearsal of the Sovereign’s Parade this month. It was a day full of music and the ceremony for the cadets completing their pass out parade having been at Sandhurst for a whole year.

Engineering Squad UK

AC engineering students Jimmy Page previously at Perins School and Tom Andrews previously at The Petersfield School are two of only three students nationally to qualify for Squad UK in industrial electronics. After training one will be chosen to represent the UK at World Skills 2017 in Abu Dhabi.

At the UK final of the national SkillsShow in Birmingham last month, Jimmy Page (previously at PerinsSchool) took Gold and Tom Andrews (previously at The Petersfield School) came fourth and was awarded highly commended. Both students were selected for Squad UK to be trained for selection for Abu Dhabi Worldskills in 2017.

Paralympic aspirations

Tia Ruel, an Alton College student, previously at Treloar’s School, is hoping to be one of the next set of Paralympians going to Tokyo in 2020 to represent Team GB in the sport of boccia. She is currently studying for the BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Sport at College and hopes to become a full-time boccia player when she completes her studies.

Maths Challengers make UK Final!

Talented Maths students achieved a close second to independent King Edward VI School at the regional finals of the Senior Team Maths Challenge and will compete at the National Final in Feb 2016. Local Hampshire college, Peter Symonds took third place.

England Under 19s Captain

Former Alton College student Brad Taylor, previously at Eggar’s School, was recently named Captain of England Under 19s by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) for their upcoming tour against Sri Lanka and India in Colombo next month. BBC South Today featured Brad on the 6pm news slot, interviewing him whilst the squad were training. We caught up with him once filming had finished...

Art & Design Students: Industry Standard Work!

Talented Art and Design students impressed an experienced group of judges with industry standard work in a BBC2 Dragon's Den style session held annually as part of the course. After much deliberation Alice Burgin, previously at Calthorpe Park and Ophelia Luck, previously at Robert May's were awarded joint first place.
