#budget2016 @altoncollege

Alton College Students’ Union hosted a Q&A session with Damian Hinds, MP for East Hampshire as part of the talks @altoncollege initiative. The talk called ‘The Budget, The Economy and Economics’ took place in the Wessex Arts Theatre to an audience of students eager to hear their local MP’s thoughts on the recent budget and to question him about government policies, tax and the economy.

Higher Ed style Conference for History Students

History students were inspired at a university-style conference called ‘Symposium on Saladin and the Third Crusade’ recently. Hosted by renowned scholar and TV historian Dr Thomas Asbridge (pictured with College students), the day involved lectures and a round table discussion with international historians and other FE and HE students.

1st Prize: TPS Gifted and Talented Pupils

Gifted and Talented pupils from The Petersfield School have scooped first prize again at the College’s annual Above and Beyond Competition. This year’s topic was ‘The Refugee Crisis’ and the final presentations took place on campus last week.

Second year Music student, Harry Baker, previously at Weydon School, has recently released his first album entitled Friends, Themes and Poems now available both on iTunes and as hard copy. We caught up with him in a brief break in his busy schedule fitting in College work, gigs and writing new material.

Sporting Success Celebrated

Three College Sport students Terry Brigdale, previously at Eggar's School, Tia Ruel, previously at Treloars and Jonathan Berg, previously at Bohunt recently received accolades at the East Hampshire Sports Awards, recognising sporting achievements and participation across the county.

The East Hampshire Sports Awards 2016 were recently presented at a special evening held at the Old Thorn Manor Hotel. More than 300 sportsmen and women from across the region congregated to recognise sporting  achievements and the commitment of the people who make success possible, like coaches and officials.

Student Investors

Four teams of Business students have made it through to the semi-final of the 2016 Student Investor Challenge. More than 10,000 teams took part in the first stage of the competition with only 500 teams progressing to the semi-final which takes place online over four weeks across February and March.

Tate Art Exchange

A group of Art students are participating in a very exciting project run by The Tate in collaboration with the Red Cross called BP Art Exchange. The project is running in parallel in Denmark and will feature in a major exhibition for the opening of Tate 2 in June.

Ten College students are involved in the programme which started earlier in the year and continues until June.

Scientific Enlightenment

A small group of biology students travelled to The Diamond Light Centre, the UK's national synchrotron science facility in Oxford which is used by over 3000 academic and industrial researchers across a wide range of scientific disciplines. The students undertook a series of workshops, including hands-on lab experiments, a tour of the facilities and a classroom session on drugs and disease.

Fashion students weave their magic

Brilliant Creative Arts students teamed up with undergraduates from the Winchester School of Art to compete against other colleges to design and produce fashion garments recently. One team finished in second place and designer and panel judge Reem Alasadi likened their work to Comme de Garcons and said she would buy the garments herself!

Fashion students across all levels of courses on offer at Alton College (A level, BTEC and Foundation degree) attended the event at Winchester School of Art at which they were in competition with students from a number of local colleges. The students worked in two teams, one of which finished second overall in the competition, to design and produce a range of fashion items.
