Teamwork adds up to Maths success!

Pupils from Mill Chase Academy and Bordon Junior School finished top in the fourth annual Alton College Team Maths Challenge recently. They were competing against pupils from local secondary and primary schools in an afternoon of complex individual and team rounds set by College Maths staff covering a broad range of mathematical skills.

Vocational taster day

Year 10 pupils from Eggar’s School visited College for exciting vocational subject taster sessions recently. The group experienced hands on activities in Engineering, in the state-of-the-art Sonardyne Centre, and Public Services.

There was also the opportunity for students to have a tour round the media centre and visit the Health and Social Care department.

Celebrating 36 yrs of outstanding success!

This week Alton College celebrated 36 years since its official opening on 23 May, 1980 by then Secretary of State, Mark Carlisle. The College was one of the first purpose-built Sixth Forms in the UK and opened for teaching in September 1978 to a cohort of 226 students. Today, approximately 2,000 students from over 97 different schools travel from across four counties to study here.

Scholarship Ceremony

The Alton College Foundation Scholarships for Excellence ceremony took place this week in the Wessex Arts Centre with students, parents, sponsors, governors, teaching staff, and foundation directors coming together to celebrate and congratulate the students on receiving a scholarship over a wide range of subjects.

The 14th Scholarships for Excellence Awards took place in the Wessex Arts Centre at Alton College on 11th February.

Trevor Heley, Managing Director of the Foundation, opened the Ceremony by welcoming students, parents, sponsors, College staff, Governors and the Foundation Directors who were in the audience to celebrate the achievement of the successful scholars.

Alumna is Rising Artist

Talented artist and alumna Tessa Lyons, previously at Eggar’s school, studied BTEC National Diploma in Art and Design at College before achieving a degree in illustration at the University of Brighton. Currently combining her love of landscapes, climbing and art, she lives and is exhibiting in the Lake District.

Legacy gift to benefit students

The College will receive £30,000 from the Alton College Foundation thanks to the benevolence of the Grace Atkinson Will Trust, a local charity dedicated to helping other charities and organisations locally and nationally. The money will go towards a new minibus to enable students to attend trips and sporting fixtures.
