AC Foundation Second Year Awards

The Alton College Foundation ceremony for second year students took place in the Wessex Arts Centre at Alton College on 26 September 2018.  The Alton College Foundation introduced the awards to celebrate students who had shown outstanding achievement within their subjects during their first year of study.

Mr Trevor Heley, Managing Director of the Foundation, opened the Ceremony by welcoming students, parents, sponsors, College staff and the Foundation Directors who were in the audience to celebrate the achievement of the successful award winners.

Mr Heley explained that the Foundation had great pleasure including the presentations for a special essay competition sponsored by Sir Simon and Lady Virginia Robertson and Sir James Scott. As a long-time supporter of the Foundation, Sir Simon Robertson had set a challenge for students at the College to address an important issue of the day by answering the question:

“How can the current political economy be reorganised without undue disruption in order to reduce inequality within our society in the UK?”

Alton College students had risen to the challenge and produced comprehensive essays to address the question.  The shortlisted essays were judged by Sir Simon Robertson, Sir James Scott and Mr Peter Wilson (Director of the Alton College Foundation).  The winner of the competition, Lucy Bayliss, received £2,500 for her winning submission sponsored by Sir Simon and Lady Virginia Robertson.  The runner-up, Alf Hamer, received £750 sponsored by Sir James Scott.  Sir Simon Robertson had the pleasure of presenting the prizes to Lucy and Alf at the award ceremony.

Mr Heley congratulated the eleven second year students who had excelled in their chosen subjects of Creative Visual Arts, Engineering and Mathematics.

The following awards were then presented:

  • Peter Wilson, Director of the Alton College Foundation, presented the second year Creative Visual Art Awards to Emily Barnett, Sarah Buckley and Laila Virji.
