As part of African Adventures, a group volunteering organisation leading trips to Ghana, a group of 18 intrepid students and 3 staff travelled to Woe in Ghana at the beginning of April for a life-changing experience. Woe is a small rural town in Ghana’s Volta region on the South West coast of Africa, where the volunteers spent nearly 2 weeks working at the Tegbi EP School to help paint and rebuild a six-unit classroom block. Students volunteering as teaching volunteers were split across classrooms, assisting teachers with taking exams for 4-17 year-olds. The Alton College students all got a massive amount out of the trip working very hard contributing to improving the lives of the young African pupils. Alton College staff and students donated 487 kg of stationery including pencils, exercise books and rulers alongside a large amount of children’s clothing. The Alton College students made many friends with the local children and visited the local rural villages and markets seeing first-hand how impoverished communities live. They then went north to see the great Wli Waterfalls and the Monkey Sanctuary. This trip was an eye-opening, once in a lifetime experience for all.

Trips and enrichment activities are a key part of being at Alton College, learning new skills and getting involved in different life experiences. This trip to Ghana is one of a range of opportunities open to students over the year. More information about what is available can be found here.
