Bar Mock Trial finals

In March, 14 Alton College students competed as a team in the finals of the Citizenship Foundation’s National Bar Mock Trial competition in the Court of Sessions in Edinburgh. Having won the Guildford regional heat in November 2014, the students argued three cases before judges including Lord Leveson, who chaired the recent inquiry into the British press. The team competed against other schools and colleges who won their regional heats to take their places in the national finals. The students took different roles such as barristers, witnesses, court clerks and macers (the Scottish equivalent of a court usher). The competition was a great opportunity to develop vital skills such as how to sustain coherent arguments, responsive thinking and confident public speaking.
