Music student Scottie Thompson was recently awarded the Winchester Young Arts Music Prize 2018 for Original Jazz Composition which was presented by The Arts Society Winchester as part of the Hampshire New Music event at the Guildhall in Winchester on Tuesday 6th November. Scottie is a first-year student studying A level Music, Music Technology and BTEC Music Performing (Jazz). The competition was organised as part of a series of Remembrance events, and all entries were inspired by the work of the artist Paul Nash, and the powerful, emotive letter he sent to his wife from the battlefields.

Scottie's piece 'Reply To The Messenger' was given its premiere on the evening, performed by Hampshire Music Service Jazz Ensemble, led by Shaun Riches. Alton College Contemporary Music Ensemble also took part in the concert. Under the direction of Alton College Lecturer of Music Pande Shahov, the ensemble gave first performances of ten newly-composed pieces by young composers studying at the College.
