Second year student Holly Denton was recently nominated and shortlisted for one of the upReach Student Social Mobility Awards. upReach is a charity which helps disadvantaged students from across the UK to realise their potential. The awards are organised to showcase the incredible achievements of undergraduates from lower socio-economic backgrounds from across the UK and to recognise students who have excelled in their studies and beyond, and shown great potential to excel as they launch their careers. The focus is on students who have demonstrated great resilience, determination or initiative, or boosted their employability in innovative ways.

Holly was nominated as she has completed over 250 hours, since June 2018, in the youth work sector. She has worked at three youth clubs around Hampshire, with the age ranges of 11-17, and at a LGBT specific club helping to run an event of the young peoples’ choosing to raise awareness for mental health in LGBT youth. Holly has also worked at Challengers (which aims to give a safe and comfortable place for disabled children to play) and she is currently working with the College on the mental health conference.  Holly is focused on helping those from less advantaged backgrounds, as well as severe health problems. The awards ceremony took place at the House of Lords at the end of November, and Holly was in the top three of her category.

On receiving her nomination, Holly said:

“I am really honoured to be shortlisted for this award, and am especially glad that the awards as a whole are occurring, as it is bringing attention to how important it is to promote social mobility. Peoples’ futures shouldn’t be determined by the circumstances of their upbringing.”
